Educated at the Conservatoire National, holder of the Grand Prix de Rome, winner of various composition competitions, professor at the Paris Conservatoire, officer of the French Legion of Honour, member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts... and yet a mediocre composer whose few successes came from official commissions (national, municipal, archiepiscopal), Charles Lenepveu (1840-1910) cannot be overlooked as an unusual example of official and academic art in the late 19th century, both in terms of his cursus honorum and his musical output.
