CD-Book. Bru Zane Label. French Opera Collection n. 33.
A triumph right from its premiere in November 1831, Robert le Diable captivated contemporaries and established the French genre of grand-opéra. This richly contrasted work, conceived as a total spectacle, benefited from the sumptuous staging its fantastical plot was given. Against the backdrop of a medieval legend, it depicts a confrontation between Good and Evil, pitting against each other a group of protagonists torn between desire and duty. This foundational score of musical Romanticism – once a cornerstone of the repertory at the Paris Opéra, where it was performed more than 750 times in the nineteenth century – is now gradually emerging from oblivion, but can only do so with an outstanding cast of singers like the one assembled here
