The libretto for Offenbach’s opera-féerie in four acts and twenty-three scenes was inspired by Jules Verne. The current Parisian craze for this type of musical extravaganza was due essentially to its impressive stage effects. Two ballets and some twenty sets took the audience on a journey from the Earth to the Moon, recreating among other sights the Paris Observatory, a working blast furnace and the crater of an erupting volcano. But the librettists’ creativity also found expression in zany characters and imaginary places: a lunar landscape, a glass palace, mother-of-pearl galleries, the ‘Land of the Paunchy’, etc. The producers even borrowed a dromedary and an ostrich from the zoo at the Jardin d’Acclimatation. To accompany this theatrical display, Offenbach composed a sumptuous musical epic, stringing together a succession of colourful and picturesque hit numbers.
