Paris, 1778. The antagonism between the rival Gluckists and Piccinnists, supporting German and Italian music respectively, was at its height. As a means of eluding those rivalries, the Académie Royale de Musique (the Paris Opera) decided that a third man was needed, one who was as famous as Gluck and Piccinni. The internationally renowned Johann Christian Bach was chosen, who duly travelled from his home in London to Paris, where he was asked to compose the music for Amadis. lt was intended as a response to Gluck's Armide and Piccinni's Roland – and what a respome it turned out to be!
