Returning to the nocturne in his op.139 of 1892, seven years after his first two essays in the genre (op.68 in 1882 and op.90 in 1885), Godard explores combinations rather different from those of its predecessors. The melody is evenly spread between the two hands within a straightforward chordal texture that extends into the high treble register before descending into the tenor.
