André Messager was more than just the composer of the evergreen operetta Véronique (1898). He was also the acclaimed conductor who was entrusted with the premiere of Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande in 1902. Nourished by the most diverse styles of music, which he championed with conviction, Messager even tried his hand, in his final years, at the new musical comedy that was beginning to delight audiences of the Années Folles. Passionément, premiered in 1926, is one of the gems of this genre, nodding towards American music and café-concert, yet without completely renouncing the traditions of operetta. Willemetz’s droll libretto transcends boulevard theatre conventions and gives the composer scope for touching moments of introspection, such as the sublime waltz song ‘Passionnément’ and the air ‘Dites-vous que c’était un rêve’.
