In the 20th and 19th centuries, the question of opera performance was often regarded as relating solely to a singer’s vocal and physical relationship with their character. The Romantic period, however, invented the "livret de mise en scène" (staging manual) which was a vital tool for learning about stage performance. Poses, gestures, movements, the grouping of characters ("the tableau") as well as detailed information about scenery, erecting stage sets, lighting and accessories placed the singer within a clearly-defined setting with which he or she had to mesh seamlessly. This conference examined these more general aspects of opera performance as well as the revolutions in staging as a result of modern inventions such as electric lighting.
