Des simples billets de Berlioz, Bizet, Wagner aux correspondances fournies de Gounod (affectueuse), Liszt (aux conseils avisés) ou Widor (amusée ou mordante) de la lettre torrentueuse de Stamaty en 1846 – proposant un programme d’études pour le jeune Saint-Saëns – à celle argumentée de d’Indy, en 1919, défendant ses convictions musicales, ce sont plusieurs générations de créateurs notoires, à des titres divers, qui sont représentées par près de six cents documents tirés des archives personnelles de Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921), accumulées au cours d’une étonnante carrière de soixante-quinze ans comme pianiste, organiste et compositeur à la réputation internationale.
